Just Like My Grandfather Taught Me:
Another
smile
a
memory
a
lovers quarrel
a
widows misery
a
brutal war
tore
between families
I
raise my hand
sharp
and proud
just
like my grandfather taught me
southern
pride and jazz band beats
folded
flags and unmarked graves
black
veils hide red rimmed eyes
Another
pray
a
workday
a
wistful newlywed
a
deployed Marine
a
summer's eve
spent
with fireflies
moonlight
and strawberry wine
luxuries
bought by oversea soldiers
Until
the day I can't speak
you'd
better believe,
my
hand will raise
my
voice will pledge
ever more; sharp
and proud
Just
like my grandfather taught me.
How wonderful that you had such a connection with your grandfather. The morals and ethics we learn from family stand us in good stead throughout our lives.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your kind words, my grandfather is everything to me. When i use to have a choose of doing something bad, like stealing from a grocery store or something I use to think of my grandfather and how he would look at me if he ever found out.
Deletenicely done, excellent imagery & word choices, evocative of that spirit of your grandfather. Thank you for sharing.
